Claiming Space: Before

Who: Annika C.
Where: Pasadena, Calif.

For seven years we looked for an early-20th-century fixer-upper that we could restore with the help of my contractor father-in-law. Our 1920s bungalow had been neglected for many years when we purchased it, and every room needed work, but none so much as the kitchen. The plumbing didn't work, the cabinets were a disaster, and the linoleum was cracking. The layout was strange, with so many doors to other rooms coming off of the kitchen that there was no space anywhere for a refrigerator.
