For seven years we looked for an early-20th-century fixer-upper that we could restore with the help of my contractor father-in-law. Our 1920s bungalow had been neglected for many years when we purchased it, and every room needed work, but none so much as the kitchen. The plumbing didn't work, the cabinets were a disaster, and the linoleum was cracking.
