Being able to reuse the existing cabinetry was a huge budget-saver (and cut down on waste), but don't even get us started about how many coats of paint it required. Under a layer of cracked tile flooring we found the original 1911 hardwood floors, which we had refinished and in doing so scored period-charm bonus points. We had granite counter tops installed, and with a period-inspired white subway-tile backsplash. I sourced almost everything we bought for the kitchen online and saved hundreds. While we pinched our pennies on most purchases, we splurged on the countertops and appliances. Who did the work: I did most of the work myself.
