You showed us your stunning kitchen transformations. Now see which ones were finalists in our Reader Remodel Contest, as picked by you and the editors of This Old House
We designed the cabinets and the 3-by-8-foot island ourselves and had a local cabinetmaker build and install them. I made and finished all the maple countertops and island top myself. I installed and finished the ¾-inch tongue-and-groove knotty-pine floor. What was originally intended as an island serves as a desk area where we can write cards and store recipes. What started out as a "simple" remodel ended up being much more. We ended up with a very open plan for our family of six where we can entertain, cook, and store our food and supplies without stepping on each other's toes.
Who did the work: I did some of the work myself, but a contractor did most of it. Cost: $25,000 to $50,000
