With a little creativity and many weekends and nights of labor, we were able to turn stock oak cabinetry into a custom kitchen. We chopped a few cabinets in half, added a little molding, and cut up a hollow wood door to make the open floating shelves. Voila! Custom cabinetry at a great price. By removing the soffit and bringing the cabinets to the ceiling, we were able to add much-needed storage. Gray slate replaced a boring white ceramic floor, and glossy white subway tile, black granite, and chrome fixtures really make the small space shine.
Who did the work: We did all the work ourselves.
Cost: Under $5,000
