A Spiffed-Up Colonial: After

Who: Melissa M.
Where: Arlington, Va.

We broke ground in January 2008 and completed the project in August 2009. Although the contractor did the majority of the building, we took on several projects, including the fireplace mantel, wood stove hood, crown molding, built-in bookcases, and other finish work. Our house now has five bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms, an upstairs laundry room, and spacious master suite with walk-in closet. The main floor has an open, circular floor plan, which is perfect for entertaining large crowds. We love the result!

Who did the work: I did some of the work myself, but a contractor did most of it.
Cost: More than $100,000
