Who: Andrew S.
Where: Prattville, Ala.
We decided to remodel our 106-year-old home. It had been sitting empty for many years when we bought it. The house was built on brick piers on a conventional foundation so that it could "breathe," but we found that the floors had rotted through because a previous owner had bricked over the lattice skirting around the base that allowed moisture and air to escape. So water got trapped underneath the house and rotted the floorboards and structure from below.
