We Set Rules for Renovating: After

Who: Jim Z.
Where: Easton, Conn.

We added insulation in exterior walls, new windows, better drainage, and a radon detection system, and we upgraded the electrical system. The interior got a complete renovation, with added built-ins wherever possible to maximize storage space. All cabinets and fixtures are period reproductions. We kept all original plaster, installed additional trim details, and painted every room. On the exterior, the house got new details, including custom cedar shutters, and we landscaped the yard.

Who did the work: I did most of the work myself.
Cost: More than $100,000
