A Newlywed Victorian Renovation: After

Who: Jon and Jennifer D.P.
Where: Montclair, N.J.

We gutted the kitchen and bumped out 20 feet to enlarge its footprint. We added a mudroom and a half-bath, and relocated the back door so it was convenient to the garage. On the second floor we converted a bedroom into a master bath, made a new hall bath, and enclosed the old hallway into the master bedroom. In 2009, with kids, we embarked on a second renovation. We swapped the position of the foyer and parlor by extending the porch. The original kitchen was transformed into a central hallway with a closet, bath, and pantry. We added a family room, living room, and a new staircase, bedroom, bathroom, and laundry room.

Who did the work: I did some of the work myself, but a contractor did most of it.
Cost: More than $100,000
