So Sophisticated: After

Who: Caren H.
Where: Glenside, Pa.

Our family room and dining room are one large room, so we started by taking down all of the wallpaper (it was even on the pipes) and the wood paneling. We then took down the ceiling, which was bowing. While that was down, my husband and father-in-law rewired both rooms. Next, we removed the gross carpets and hired someone to sand and stain the floors. A fresh coat of paint was put on the walls. New furniture put the final touches on our remodel.

Who did the work: I did most of the work myself.
Cost: About $1,000 to $5,000
