While communal life isn't for everyone, the Meadowlark Cooperative, located in the beautiful Eastern Plains of Colorado, sure has its charms. The co-op was founded earlier this year by long-time agrarians Aaron Brachfeld and Mary Choate, who want to give away parcels of the cooperative's 60-acre property to help out those hit hard by the recent financial crisis. About 20 people have taken them up on their offer so far, and many are using the fertile land to grow crops and raise livestock. The Deal:
While your parcel is free, you have to pay for the house you build, and donate either a portion of your crop or a small percentage of your earnings to the co-op once a month.
