You showed us your beautifully crafted family gathering areas. Now see which ones were finalists in our Reader Remodel Contest, as picked by you and the editors of This Old House
We wanted this new feature to feel as if it was original to the house, so we copied the dentil work from the home's original fireplace mantel. Besides the bookcase, the work included extensive plaster work, refacing the fireplace surround with marble, refinishing the hardwood floors, and restoring all original hardware (sash lifts, hinges, etc.).
Who did the work: I did all the work myself Cost: $1,000 to $5,000
