Lessons Learned From the Past: After

Who: Nancy Burgin
Where: Saugatuck, MI

I worked to return to the original 1880s feel of the house and update it for life today. I could hear my grandmother telling me, "If you ever change the house, remember...the house had a porch and pillars; keep the pine floors; put the pocket doors back on the parlor." Remembering her comments, I rebuilt as close to the original as possible, adding the kitchen bay window where my grandmother sat to sew on Aunt Emma's machine.

Who did the work: A contractor did all the work
Cost: More than $100,000
