September 2009 Farmhouse
Location: Camden, Arkansas
Status: Still Available
For more than a century, this farmhouse in rural Ouachita County was the lively homestead of one of the area's best-known families. George Hickman built the place in 1898, after he inherited the land it sits on from his father, John Brona Hickman. In addition to raising four children here, George and his wife raised cattle, sold milk, and cultivated 17 acres of peach trees on the surrounding farmland. The Hickman house is now owned by the Ouachita Historical Society, which is trying to find someone to buy it, restore it—and tend to the 1.2 acres of land that surrounds it. The house has a brand new roof, as well as new wiring, plumbing, and HVAC. Many offers have been made, but no one has snatched it up yet—surprising, since the asking price is $39,700!
