A Rescue Station in Need of Rescuing

Location: Long Beach, New Jersey
Price: $1 (Must be moved)

Back in the 19th century, imperiled victims of merciless waters and sinking ships relied on what was known as the Life Saving Service, a forerunner to the Coast Guard, which set up "saving stations" along coastal waters. The stations housed men who would watch over the waters, looking for anyone in need of rescue. Now Life Saving Station No. 5, in Long Branch, New Jersey is in need of a rescue of its own. A developer is looking to build luxury condos here, and the shingle-style station, built back in 1897, needs to be moved. For more information, call Lawrence F.
