Fixing A Disaster: After
Who: Carolyn H
Where: Piney Flats, Tenn.
We had an island built by a local sawmill, and to save money we stained it and used granite tiles on top ($125 for the tiles). We opted for a black cast-iron sink and a bridge faucet, which we installed. We repaired the plaster walls and wallpapered (from a wallpaper company going out of business). We hung the tin ceiling and replaced the light fixtures (as it had none). We refinished the original heartwood pine floors. We found the appliances at a gas company that had filed for bankruptcy and bought all of them for $7,500. They also gave us the cabinet that houses the microwave for free. We stripped it and refinished it.
Who did the work: I did some of the work myself
Cost: $10,000 to $25,000
