Water rolls off the tops of the eaves, into the gutter, and away from the house. But eaves also help control sun and shade exposure. In warm climates, deep overhangs cast a shadow on the house when the sun is high. In colder climates, shallower overhangs let the sun bathe the exterior in warmth.
