Green roofs are being used on all sorts of structures, including dog houses. Sustainable Pet Design offers a range of custom houses (including the Dog Barn, shown) with a mixture of plants native to your region. (If you live in California, the roofs come pre-planted; elsewhere, they come with a special soil and plant recommendations.) The roofs provide extra insulation against temperature and sound, attract butterflies, filter runoff water that can be used for doggie drinking, and repel fleas. During the first six months, you'll have to water regularly, but after that, little maintenance is required.
