Depression Modern

In the middle of the Great Depression, people were looking for hope. One place they found it was in the shiny surfaces, racy lines, and futuristic spirit of automobile design. Folks may not have been able to afford a new Chrysler, but they were eager to get those same mercury-sleek details in furniture, lighting, and appliances for their homes.

To demonstrate Depression Modern's continued vitality, we mixed some new products with the vintage collection in dealer Michael Smith's 1938 home, pictured here.
Upholstered chair, $699; Crate & Barrel.
Wood wall-mount clock, $30; Bed Bath & Beyond
