Lush Lawn

From Front Yard Makeover, June 2003

Three years ago, if anyone had asked me what kind of yard I liked best, this would have been my answer: "Drrrr. A pretty one?" Then I saw this unbelievable transformation of a tiny, sad-looking Seattle lot into a multicolored and multilayered urban oasis, and it was like "Bingo!" To borrow from the story, I like the "formal structure combined with loose, almost wild-looking plantings." Yeah, that's it. Oh, and the best part: the homeowners got permission from the city to plant the barren strip between the sidewalk and the curb. That little detail really makes the yard look so much bigger, and it's a feature the entire neighborhood can enjoy.
