Our two-story farmstead, built around 1914 outside Sidney, Montana, was showing its age when we bought it in 1994. The first floor included the kitchen, dining room, living room, and one bedroom. We drew up plans to relocate the kitchen, bring the laundry room up from the basement, create a new bath in the old entry, add on a small TV room, and build a new entry to the house. Moving the kitchen started a chain reaction: removing a wall meant the chimney had to move, moving the chimney meant replacing the furnace, and so on. A woodworker matched the style of the wide wood trim, and the lumberyard found oak flooring that blended the new addition with the old house.
