Step 17: Trim the lid

Mark lengths of the nose and cove molding along the edges of the plywood lid. Miter the ends of each piece at a 22½-degree angle. Apply glue to the back side and ends of each molding piece and to the edges of the lid. Attach the molding to the lid, flush with its surface, by carefully nailing 1-inch nails through the molding and into the edge of the lid.

    1. ½-inch oak plywood to make the lid and table: Get one 4x8-foot sheet.

    2. Nose and cove oak molding to trim the lid. Get two 8-foot lengths.

    3. 1x2 oak to trim the table. Get four 8-foot lengths.

    4. 1x4 oak to make the table's apron and collar. Get two 8-foot boards.

    5. ⅜x6 oak to make the coasters. Get three 2-foot boards.

    6. ¾-inch medium-density fiberboard (MDF) to make the playing surface. Get one 4x4-foot half sheet.

    7. Newel post to make the stand. Get an oak post at least 30 inches tall.

    8. Corbels to make the feet. Get four @ 10 inches.9. Felt. Get a 4x4-foot piece to cover and wrap the edges of the playing surface.

    10. Spray adhesive to attach the felt to the playing surface.

    11. ⅝-inch brad nails

    12. 1-inch brad nails

    13. 1¼-inch brad nails

    14. 2-inch deck screws

    15. 6-inch timber screws to attach the corbels to the newel post. Get eight.

    16. Wood glue

    17. 150- and 220-grit sandpaper
