Step 13: Attach the Crown Molding's Backing Strips

  Using a circular saw, rip the angle of the crown molding's backing strips and cut them to length. For detailed instruction on sizing the backing strips, see Backing Strips for Crown Molding. Temporarily cap the top of the hutch with a scrap board and hold a piece of crown against it so that the crown's bevels sit flush against both the cap and the hutch. Mark the bottom of the crown, and transfer the line around the hutch. Position the backing strips above the line enough to account for the crown's bevel, and attach them to the sides and 1x5 top rail using 1½-inch nails.

    1. 1x15 edge-glued shelving. Get four 6-foot boards and one 3-foot board to make the sides, top, bottom, shelves, and wine-rack insert.

      2. 1x3 to create support strips for the bottom board.

      3. -inch square dowels to make the glass rack. Get two 3-foot lengths.

      4. x3 lattice strips to make the glass rack. Get two 3-foot lengths.

      5. 3¼-inch baseboard molding: Get a 6-foot length.

      6. 3x9/16-inch crown molding: Get a 6-foot length.  7. 2x4 to make the backing strips for the crown molding

      8. 1x2 to make the face-frame stiles: Get two 6-foot boards in clear pine.

      9. 1x5 to make the face-frame rails: Get at least 3 feet in clear pine.

      10. 5mm lauan for the backing. Get one 4x8 sheet.

      11. 1½-inch brad nails

      12. -inch brad nails

      13. 1¼-inch drywall screws
