Step 5: Attach the Cleats

  Lay the side pieces side by side, with the ends flush. Make a line across both faces 3¾ inches in from what will be the bottom of the hutch and 4½ inches in from the other end, the top. Cut the 1x3 support strips to length using a miter saw. Glue and screw them along the 3¾-inch line using 1¼-inch screws, as shown.

    1. 1x15 edge-glued shelving. Get four 6-foot boards and one 3-foot board to make the sides, top, bottom, shelves, and wine-rack insert.

      2. 1x3 to create support strips for the bottom board.

      3. ⅝-inch square dowels to make the glass rack. Get two 3-foot lengths.

      4. ⅜x3 lattice strips to make the glass rack. Get two 3-foot lengths.

      5. 3¼-inch baseboard molding: Get a 6-foot length.

      6. 3⅝x9/16-inch crown molding: Get a 6-foot length.  7. 2x4 to make the backing strips for the crown molding

      8. 1x2 to make the face-frame stiles: Get two 6-foot boards in clear pine.

      9. 1x5 to make the face-frame rails: Get at least 3 feet in clear pine.

      10. 5mm lauan for the backing. Get one 4x8 sheet.

      11. 1½-inch brad nails

      12. ⅝-inch brad nails

      13. 1¼-inch drywall screws
