Step 2: Drill holes for the rungs

Lay the 2x4 uprights flat on your work surface. Measure and mark the location of the holes for the rungs along the centerline of each board at 3, 15, and 27 inches from the top. Using a drill/driver fitted with a 1-inch paddle bit, drill the holes for the rungs clean through each 2x4. For the cleanest hole, drill on top of a piece of scrap.
