Step 1: Install the toekick

Remove the baseboard molding from the wall where the entertainment center will go. Then install a 3½-inch-high platform (also called a toekick) for the cabinets to sit on. Build the platform out of 2x4s; fasten the parts together with 3-inch drywall screws.

    2. Contact cement, used to adhere prefinished plywood skin to assembled cabinets

    3. Paintbrush and paint roller, used to apply contact cement

    4. 1 ½-inch finishing nails, for attaching trim to cabinets

    5. 2 x 4s, used to build platform

    6. 2 ½- and 3-inch drywall screws, for joining together cabinets and assembling platform

    7. Wood shims, used to level platform and plumb cabinets

    8. 3/4 x 1-inch wood strips, to provide nailing support for crown molding
