How to Build Stilts
  • 1 to 2 hours
  • $20 to $25

Difficulty: Easy If you have basic cutting and drilling skills, learning to walk on the stilts may be harder than putting them together.

Age Range: 8 to 14 years

If life could be a little more like the circus, most kids would be gleefully delighted. But while no one expects you’ll be able to keep a lion in the spare room and an elephant in the back yard, you could certainly cobble together something for the acrobat in your family. A pair of low stilts is a great way to teach kids about balance without sending them out on the high wire. And building them is rather easy, as This Old House general contractor Tom Silva demonstrates here. All it takes are a couple of pieces of lumber and some sturdy bolts, and in an hour or two you’ll be observing the crowds from your elevated perch. Just be careful and keep the clowning to a minimum.
