Q: My pocket door is hard to move. Should I lubricate the rollers?

— Ronald, Jefferson, WI

A: Tom Silva replies: Before messing around with lubricant, make sure the rollers and track are free of dirt and debris. While you're at it, tighten all the screws you can get to that hold the track to the framing. If the screws have lost their bite, replace them with slightly longer and larger ones.

I don't know what type of roller your door has — some are metal, some are plastic — but a spray lubricant called Slipit works on most anything. Spray the roller's axle as well as the track. Don't overdo it, though; a little goes a long way. You don't want the excess to drip all over your door.
