Q: The first step on our staircase has a curve on one end. I am in the
process of replacing the step. How do I bend the wood for the riser?
— Andrew, Long Valley, NJ
A: Tom Silva replies: To make a section of wood bend, make a series of cuts about a half-inch apart on the back, leaving no more than 1/8 inch of wood uncut. This will give you a very thin face that you can bend along the front of the riser and give a curve to your stairs.
