Q: I have some cheap old paneling that I am still not prepared to rip down and replace. Can it be painted?

— Sonja Woburn, Massachusetts

A: Tom Silva replies: You can paint panel, but be sure to clean it well to get all the oil and wax off it so that the paint will stick. You may even have to put stain killer on it to stop it from bleeding. Then use a latex paint, which will cover the wood grain well.
