Q: I just bought an old house and want to put up some shelves in the basement. I need some help and ideas on types that will work with cement walls, and what is the best way to make them. Thank you very much.

A: Tom Silva replies: I'd recommend using wire shelving with masonry fasteners. The best kind has two metal brackets that fasten into the wall and multiple shelves that can be easily moved up and down as needed. This shelving is versatile and gives the walls plenty of ventilation.
