Q: We have built a 20'x40' addition to our concrete block house. The
addition's floor is 3/4 inch higher than the existing house's
where they meet in our foyer. Our staircase is in the addition but the
flared last step extends into the existing house. We are using
3/4" hardwood floors throughout. How can we get the area where they meet
to "flow"? It is a high-traffic area, and we don't want to trip!

A: Tom Silva replies: I would think that you may want to raise the floor in the foyer using 1/2-inch flooring. At the transition between the foyer and the staircase, install a threshold. Your eye will be drawn to the threshold, not the difference in floor heights, and there should be no trouble with tripping.
