Q: We are taking an existing bedroom and turning it into a den with a gas fireplace along an outside wall. How do I install it?

— Kurt, Chicago, IL

A: Richard Trethewey replies: The best advice I can give you about any gas appliance is to be sure to read and follow the manufacturer's installation directions. Manufacturers get approval to sell to the public based on their safety devices, including good written instructions.

When you hear "fireplace" you think of extreme heat, but today's gas fireplaces are much cooler than long-burning wood fireplaces. Safety, however, is key with any fireplace. If you are at all unsure, call the local building inspector and or the local fire chief. They can be a good resource for safety information.
