Q: We are doing new construction and want to use radiant floor heating. Do we have to do anything special with the interior or wall framing? Should we use double plates on the floor?

A: Richard Trethewey replies: There is a terrific method of tubing installation that uses lightweight concrete or gypsum concrete on top of the sub floor. Tubing gets nailed to the subfloor with one-nail clips, then covered. For this method, an additional 2 x 4 is added at the floor plates to raise the door heights to accept the radiant system. Be careful, too, of stair heights between floors. If you are using other methods that mount from below the subfloor, then door heights do not have to be raised.
