Q: What can I do to cushion the impact of a storm door that closes too hard? No matter what I do to adjust the closing mechanism, the door closes slowly until the last 4 inches, then slams against the frame.

—Jeff Edgar, Lockport, Ill.

A: Tom Silva replies: Actually, that's what closing mechanisms, or closers, are designed to do. Moving the door quickly over those last 4 inches or so ensures that it will latch itself properly. But if you think the door is slamming too hard, maybe it's time to replace the mechanism.
