Q: I'm planning to install crown molding at the top of my living room walls. However, there's a boxed-in ventilation duct on one wall that's like a soffit above kitchen cabinets. When I get to this feature, should I apply the crown to the top of the soffit or should I step it down and follow the underside of the soffit?

A: Norm Abram replies: I would install the crown at the top of the soffit. For one thing, it would be a lot easier to install that way. But I also think the crown would just look a lot better if it followed the ceiling.
